Born in Singapore (1985), Le Matt left his engineering degree course to pursue his passion in traditional Western painting. Graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2011, his ongoing practice is rooted in the exploration of the human condition, in particular portraiture and social realism.
His artworks turn our gaze to the lived realities and visages of ordinary people, providing social commentaries to elicit awareness and empathy. Through elevating the mundane into art, it is his wish that beauty and meaning can lie in the ordinary. Matt deconstructs and reconstructs his subjects with energetic, fragmented brushwork to reveal deep narratives about societal and personal identities. He is the recipient of Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Scholarship and has exhibited at various venues including Esplanade, The Arts House, Aliwal Arts Centre, National Design Centre, Objectifs Gallery, and the Affordable Art Fair. Matt is versatile in various mediums ranging from graphite, acrylic to oil paints. He also teaches professional art classes to adults, conducts workshops and team-bonding art engagements since 2012. In 2020, he took up residency at Goodman Arts Centre where he founded his fine art studio, Art Matters. His social realism artworks are currently represented by Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery. |
